The Cost of Heavy Commercial Vehicles PDF Print
Published by Julie Parr

The East Cambridgeshire HCV Group, a voluntary group made of parish councillors and members of the public, is working with the Northstowe Joint Action Group to assess the cost to our communities of the growing numbers of heavy goods vehicles using the fen roads and travelling through our villages. We recognise that we are all dependent upon road transport for goods and services and that many journeys will be to and from local businesses but we also recognise that much traffic is through traffic for which alternative main routes could be used. The County Council has listened to our case and has recently amended the County Draft Strategic Route Map and removed the designations of the A1421 and A1123 as 'strategic' routes. It is also working hard to make routing agreements with local aggregates companies as part of their planning conditions. However, these are only partial solutions.  They do not make it illegal for an HCV operator to use a particular route and so they do not stop the fen roads being used as short cuts and bypasses for the A14, the A10 and other roads. We are therefore attempting to carry out a full analysis of the costs of these vehicles to our community. Firstly we are looking at the damage they cause to those roads, which cross the low fens where the roads move and sink and therefore constantly have to be repaired. Secondly, we want to find out about the cost to individuals as these vehicles pass through our villages. We need you to tell us about the cost to you and your family. Does your home suffer from noise and vibration? Do you have to abandon the use of some rooms because of it? Does your property suffer physical damage such as cracking masonry, broken windows or water ingress?  Are you always cleaning because of the dust? Has your property been hit by a lorry. Do you have to take special precautions when accessing your property, maintaining it or even just cutting the hedge?  Do you have an old or a listed building that you are battling to maintain? Is your sleep disturbed? Please tell us your story. A single page of A4 will suffice. Please email or send it by 30th April 2010 to

The Parish Council met on Wednesday 10th March 2010 when minutes of the last meeting and accounts to be paid were authorised and signed.  Apologies for absence were received from Cllr Holden, Cllr Bowcock and Cllr Pauline Wilson.

County Councillor Report

Cllr Hunt will attend the Parish Council meeting every three months to enable him to visit all councils in his ward on a rota basis.  He reported on highway repairs following the prolonged period of snow this winter. He thanked the Parish Council for the donation they had promised to Care & Repair, an organisation that helps a lot of people in the parishes with repair work.  He is delighted that the market stall cuts have been postponed to allow a thorough investigation.  The Guided Bus Scheme is facing some problems.  Cllr Hunt is in favour of a second school in Littleport. He also spoke about the Ely Southern Bypass and proposed railway work during 2012 – 2014.  He had voted against congestion charging.  He is also now Chairman of the liaison committee working to make sure the new household waste recycling centre at Witchford will be an asset to the area.  It is hoped it will be completed in a year’s time.

St Valentine’s Day at Wayman’s Pits PDF Print

What could be more romantic than spending a long morning planting 1500 various hedging plants? Well I can think of several more but nevertheless over 30 hardy souls turned out on a cold but dry St Valentine’s morning to help.
The trees and hedging plants were purchased from Simpsons of Fordham. Glenn Conway had generously offered to look after them until planting day and he duly arrived with trees and plants bright and early on Sunday morning. The plants were laid out on the grass in their bundles with tree guards and bamboo stakes. Written instructions on how to plant and what to plant were along side.
Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Maple, Hazel, Dog Rose and Crab Apple were the chosen species, all intended to encourage birds and wildlife to take up residence.
Tea and coffee were served by Carol Breeze and Julie Parr and later homemade soup was on offer.
With so much help we just about finished all the planting in one session – much more than I had hoped for.
I would like to thank in particular Mike Smith and Chris Prescott for all their hard work in helping to get this project underway, Carol Breeze for soup making par excellence and everyone who came and helped.
Thank you all.
As for the future - new replacement fencing to the A 1421 side of the site will be added in March along with improved access with a disabled parking area. We have installed one Kestral box and a Barn Owl box and other bird boxes will be in place soon.
In the not too distant future we hope to have picnic tables, BBQ pit and wildflower area.
If anyone has any other ideas that you would like us to consider then please do not hesitate to contact me.
