Work in Cambridge City Centre and need transport............????? PDF Print
Published by Julie Parr

Way back in 1967, what were two separate Local Authorities were merged to form the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely County Council.  Those staff who were transferred from March to the offices at Shire Hall, Cambridge were provided with a staff coach as part of their transfer arrangements.

Whilst those arrangements have long since disappeared, the coach has continued to run for the past forty-plus years paid for, in the main by the users.  However, a drop in staff numbers and greater use of IT allowing staff to work remotely placed the coach service in jeopardy.  Management at Shire Hall therefore announced that they would no longer fund the small subsidy required to keep it going.

Faced with real transport and parking difficulties, the users have mounted a rescue bid and from April 1st, the service is run as the “CB3 Transport Club”.  This change means that the service can now be offered to anyone requiring regular transport into Cambridge as users no longer have to be employed by the Council.

The service operates Monday to Friday and fares are competitive with other operators.   The coach currently picks up at the bus stop near to the Cherry Tree pub in Haddenham at around 7.40am and at the bus stop in Wilburton (near the village stores) but other stops might be considered as long as they are on the route. The return journey starts from Shire Hall at 5.05pm (4.20pm on Fridays).

If there is anyone in Haddenham or Wilburton who works in Cambridge City Centre and who needs regular transport, please contact either David Lilley on Cambridge 699114 or Colin Arnold on Cambridge 457202.  You can email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or see our webpage at http://www.cambridge.gov.uk/public/cb3transport/
