Haddenham and Aldreth Parish Council

All are welcome at meetings almost always on the second Wednesday of the month at the Arkenstall Village Centre. The Council has a number of committees to administer it's interests.

Parish Council Committees

Burial Ground

This committee is responsible for the burial ground in Chewells Lane. An area is reserved there for the interment of ashes. For easier management, the Parish Council has a policy of allowing headstones to be erected only to mark burial of bodies; small plaques only are allowed to mark the interment of ashes.

Leisure and Amenities

This committee is responsible for maintaining the Recreation Field, the grassed areas of The Green, the village pond sites, the former non-conformist burial ground, the allotments, the churchyard and the Bier House in Hop Row.

Allotments

The Council has a total of 1.3 acres of land for allotments. This is split into five-pole plots – 42 next to the recreation field, and 40 next to the burial ground. The annual rent is £3 per plot from 1 October. Parishioners may rent more than one plot, subject to availability; apply to the Chairman or the Clerk.

Non-conformist Burial Ground

The former non-conformist burial ground near The Green has been converted to a 'garden of pleasure' by planting trees, shrubs and bulbs, and introducing wild flowers. People now enjoy not just a garden but a most beautiful view sweeping from the buildings and the Great Mill in Aldreth Road, across the meadows in Bury Lane to the fens in Hillrow and beyond.

Planning

The constitution of the committee changes every three months The Parish Council is not a planning authority, but does make its views known to the Planning Department. The Clerk has copies of plans under discussion, and members of the public can ask to see them.

Footpaths and Tree Planting

This committee promotes tree planting and preservation within the Parish, liaising closely with Cambridgeshire County Council Rural Group Parish Paths Partnership. Private plantings, both large and small scale, are encouraged in order to increase the tree population in and around the village, and the Rural Group can provide tree packs. Examples of schemes can be seen on the Recreation Field (The Avenue), Two Pot Corner and the entrance at Lode Way. The footpath committee keeps a watchful eye on the local public rights of way, trying to ensure that they remain open for public access without obstruction.

Landowners look after hedges, stiles, fences and so on; the Parish Council can help with grants. The Council also keeps ground cover down, and has built footbridges to connect footpaths.

Recreation Centre

This committee manages, on behalf of the Parish Council, the flood-lit sports area and the pavilion. The flood-lit surface provides opportunities for individuals and clubs to play a variety of sports – chiefly five-a-side football, netball and tennis. To hire the pavilion or all-weather surface contact Patsy Nightingale.

Street Lighting

The Street Lighting Committee works to improve lighting in the village, adding extra lights to the darker areas. In general, the yellow lamps are owned by the County Council and the white lamps by the Parish Council. The committee regularly checks all the lamps in the village to maintain a good service.
